:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael S -- The Price of Coal : This is a remarkable book. The history of mining in Britain is an incredible story and one that elderly people like me remember from our own experience. The bravery in the face of risk of injury or death of the miners themselves (the statistic is given that one miner was seriously injured every 2 months: one killed every 6 months at the height of coal mining). The industrial disputes and challenges that the miners nearly always lost. The landowners who couldn't believe their luck that coal was discovered under their acres and became incredibly wealthy as a result. The ambiguity many feel over the events of 1984/5 with the great conflict between Thatcher and Scargill and the use of mounted police to attack strikers. The major disasters with hundreds of dead in the mines and at Aberfan. Paxman tells the story vividly and compassionately after considerable research. Read this book: it is devastating. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from James Smith -- Brilliantly Researched and Thoughtful : As we've come to expect from Jeremy Paxman, this brilliantly researched and deeply thoughtful book makes this socially and politically charged subject immensely informative and enjoyable. Jeremy's inimitable critique of those who profited hugely from the misery of the miners who toiled (and too often died) in the collieries is told with deep compassion and authority. Whether as a social historian or someone exploring their mining heritage, this is a compelling read and deserving of five stars. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 5, 2021 )
